Log house deep in the forest with private lake
Innlandet
We live in an old log house next to a small lake deep in the forest. It is a small holding for 3 generations of a family from Norway and England. There is a private lake, log cabin (rented out on Airbnb), 2 barns and many out buildings on the land.
We are a married couple with 3 children so we are looking for people that work well in a family environment. We have cats, goats, horses, ducks, chickens, sometimes pigs & a dog with moose, deer, beaver, foxes, badgers etc living in the forest and bird life on the lake.
We are looking for a couple or 2 friends together that can participate with our daily life on the farm.
* Feeding and cleaning out the animals
* Vegetable garden, cutting grass, weeding
* Harvesting vegetables
* Painting
* Collecting, splitting and stacking firewood
* Maintenance of fences
* Picking berries in the forest
* Maintenance of gravel road
* House work, helping out with meals etc
* Butcher and packing meat
* Cutting back bushes and tidying up outside area
It is essential that you are the type of people that are self motivated, don`t mind getting your hands dirty and enjoys being out in the nature. If you can`t live without high speed internet, TV and flushing toilets (we only have compost toilets) then you should not apply. Those who like to live the country life, camping, and the outdoors will be suitable to apply.
This is a place where the tasks can be physical but varied and combined with leisure activities in a peaceful natural environment.
In return we will provide food and accommodation during your stay and you will have use of bicycles, rowing boat, fishing rods etc.
We have local maps so our helpers can explore the forest and lakes nearby. The trails are clearly marked and are close to other cabins. There is a hunters cabin out in the forest where you can stay overnight as well.
There are many opportunities for hiking in the forest. Swimming & rowing on the lake. Berry and mushroom picking late summer/autumn. Possibility of a day trip to Hamar City.
We are a 1 hour train ride or drive from Oslo Gardermoen airport and we can arrange pickup from our local train station (Stange, Tangen or Hamar) or bus station (Romedal).
Hamar is the capital of the region we live in and it`s a 25 minute drive from our house. We are a little remote but that`s how we like it. There is also a local shop in our village 5km away which has all the essentials.
Helpers accommodation is in the “bryggehus” of our barn that we have converted for guests. It is small & basic but charming & cosy. It has 2 beds, table & stools. A large cast iron oven, window facing the lake, kettle, coolbox, heater plus dart board, games & maps/tourist info. Shower is located in the main house. Outdoor compost toilet 10 metres away.
***Please note we can not take helpers with pets or during the winter months October to April.
There can be mosquitoes in the summer evenings here and we only have outdoor compost toilets***

We spend two weeks in Damstuen where we felt very welcomed from the first moment. We enjoyed taking part in the family’s everyday life, especially sharing meals. It felt like everyone took interest in letting us exploring Norway and showed us different parts of the culture. For example they took us to the Theater and showed us how to make typical Norwegian food. We also had plenty of time to enjoy the idyllic place, swim in the lake and go for a two day hike in the forest.
The communication worked easily in English, we could choose our tasks freely and the family tried to make us feel most comfortable on the farm.
Thank you so much for the two wonderful weeks, we had a really good time and will miss the warmth of your place.

We spent a wonderful time with Robin and Louise, they were very welcoming, kind and open. They showed us their different activities and gave us advice for hikes, bike and boat trips and places to see in the area. We slept in a cosy little cabin and gathered berries, fed the animals, painted furniture and cooked meals. We would be very glad to come back! 😊🐐🦆🐓🐎
