Self-sufficient organic family farm
Viken
We are two sisters who live on a small farm that produces food on a small scale. We produce vegetables, potatoes and some flowers for sale, and meat production for our own use. We also produces own hay for the animals. On the farm there are 3 residential buildings, a stable, a barn and some small livestock rooms. We have some forest, where we produce our own firewood. With us you will find 6 horses, one ponni, 3 cows, 8 sheep, 2 goats, chickens, turkeys and pigs. One sister is a qualified agronomist and farrier, and she has worked for over 20 years in agriculture. The other sister is a cook and also runs her own restaurant. Both sisters have a passionate commitment to ecology and animal welfare.
Our motto is to live a simple, yet fulfilling life. Where time passes a little slower and we can live in harmony with nature and have the time to enjoy it.
What can we teach you:
Cultivation of vegetables and care of animals. Harvesting and processing of vegetables and production of hay. You can learn butcher skills and processing of the raw materials. There will also be some construction and maintenance of buildings and fences.
Tasks:
Every day our animals need to have food and water, up to several times a day. Our animals are spoiled :-) . In the early summer, we work daily in the vegetable garden with sowing and plant care. In late summer and autumn, the summer's results must be harvested and processed. Butchering is part of the autumn tasks and we start with that in September/October
In October, the last vegetables will be brought in and we process some of them. October and November we also prepare the houses for the animals for a longer winter season.
There is also some maintenance on fences and buildings, so you will learn simple carpentry tasks.
In January, we begin to sow the first seeds for the next season. And we sow seeds every month until spring, and intensify in March.
From February to March, we also spend a lot of time in the forest to produce firewood, which will dry during the summer.
At the beginning of April, we prepare the greenhouse and start moving out some plants in the greenhouse. April is also a month we start preparing the soil for planting in May.
You must enjoy working independently and enjoy learning new things. Farm work is also hard work, which requires a certain amount of perseverance.
Accommodation facilities: You have your own apartment that you have to share with other wwoofers, with beds, kitchen with frying and cooking facilities , fridge with food that we fill up for you, and a bathroom. A separate patio with table and chairs is available for relaxation just for you.
We breed trotting horses and we have a lot of training and are at events associated with the horses.
2 km from the farm is a small swimming beach and we have large outdoor areas for hiking around the farm.

It was my 2. time as woofer and I enjoyed the time there so much. Really a peaceful place to live and work. The little farm with some animals are so beautiful and we got everything we need. Gry and Ann Marlen are so kind and friendly. I will get the time in my heart forever. Thank you for your very good lifestyle!

We have just completed a month as WWOOFers at the charming farm Søstrene Hagen in Østfold and had an experience of a lifetime! Besides, we discovered muscles we never knew we had.
Though we knew (basically) nothing about farm work, the sisters received us with open arms and minds. We learned something new every day, and loved both the daily routines of moving and feeding the animals and the varied tasks in between.
Jaime (soon 78), who is the oldest WWOOF-er they have ever had and possibly the only oncologist, was particularly fond of the goats and managed to rip up a barn floor single-handedly. Karethe (62) started out being terrified of cows (Andalusian cows are temperamental at best), and by the end, she was best friends with Amalie, Mailen, Astrid and old Aagot. As a journalist, she is looking forward to writing an article about the experience, so stay tuned …
We wish to thank Ann Marlen and Gry for a wonderful stay and for all they taught us. We will miss the whole family and all the animals, and we keep expecting to hear the bleating and mooing as we wake up.
The one thing we learned more than anything is a great respect for organic farmers and all their hard work!

Within a few weeks I hope to visit the beautiful farm of Ann-Marlen and Gry and their parents for the third time. I am looking forward to their warm welcome again. And to see all the animals (I hope they are doing well), with my favorit the manager 'enke and'. Looking forward to our breakfast with the berries from the wood and the vegetables from the garden for dinner. My dog will love our hikes in the forest with the fairytale lakes.

This was the first wwoof experience for me and it was very good. The tasks varied a lot from day to day but there were larger projects like repairing the barn and it was very fun to see the progress over time. Gry and Ann Marlen both created a very pressure-free atmosphere and I could always ask for help if I needed it.

I was on the sisters farm for three weeks in january, it was a little short but right. It was a great opportunity to get to know the intensive contact involved in the independent work of caring for the animals.
A wonderful place to be and a very pleasant and pressure-free atmosphere that both create and you can be sure they are kind hosts. I am very impressed what the sisters done there every day and I'am very grateful for this experience, for the trust that they show and the positive way of welcoming people for the moment and accepting them as they are. That is worth a lot.
I wish you all the best and that you achieve your small and big goals. Hopefully see you next time.

I stayed two weeks in September and I had an amazing experience on this farm!
Gry and Ann Marlen are such welcoming and kind hosts. They teach you so much about Norwegian nature, culture and food.
Each day is different, your tasks vary a lot (feeding the animals, cutting oat, collecting vegetables, manual work with wood...), and they are always adapted to your skills (it is good to be independent, but you can always ask if you need help). I learned a lot about farm work and self sufficiency.
The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful. This place is perfect if you want to enjoy a quiet environment for a few weeks or more! You can go on hikes in the woods during your days off. If it is the right season, you can even collect some mushrooms or berries with Gry (who is by the way an amazing cook !).
I recommend this farm without any hesitation !
