Smallholding with horses, chickens, cats, sheep, herbs and some vegetables surrounded by forest and open farmland. At this farm we enjoy the effects of combining intellectual work with physical - keeping nature as the source of inspiration. The main focus at the farm is to develop a sustainable and holistic environment for horses, animals and people. I am running the farm at the same time as being associate professor in the field of cultural history at the University of Oslo. Viking and Medieval art, literature and religion is my expertise, as well as people and plant/animal relations from the viking age and beyond. My partner is a scholar at the University in Oslo, and well experienced in carpentry, masonry and forest work. On the farm we bring past practices and old traditions to life in various spectras of the farm; from harvesting fodder and herbs, to horse training. All parts of the farmlife are toughtfully integrated. Work is dependent on season: fencing, harvesting leaves, maintenance, construction work, garden work, horse and animal care. Accommodation in a guest room in a house with shared bathroom and kitchen, or cabin (also with shared bathroom and kitchen). Certifications: Not certified, but practice sustainable farming Internet access available

I just had three lovely weeks here in Östreng farm. The week days are well structured with animal daycare and some other farm activities. If you are interested in good and respectable animal care than this is the experience for you! Karoline taught me many interesting facts and thoughts about animals and our relationship with them. The work load is just sufficient to be occupied when you want to but Karoline respects very much your moods and if you tired, you can rest for sure. Karoline is also passionate about horses and she has also dedicated some hours in teaching me her practice with them. Karoline is a very independent women and it is vey inspiring to accompany her in her daily life. With the privileged social contact I got with her animals, I also learned to become more independent and this is the kind of magic which happens on her farm.

The people here in Østreng are very welcoming and lovely. My son(8 years) and I liked it very much to be here. Proposed tasks were: horse and animal care and some garden work. This experience was very pleasant both to me and my son . I can only recommend this farm to everyone! Thank you so much, Karoline!

I am so greatfull for the month I got to spend on Østreng! The host, as well as the other people working and living around the farm were so welcoming, integrating me into the life, ready to help, when ever help was needed. I got the chance to acquire many new skills and have an insight into the norwegian culture. Working on this farm was a lot of fun and I can only recommend it to everyone! Thank you so much, Karoline!
