Ahoy! Welcome to our home in Åsbygda in Stange kommune, Norway. We are Martin (42) and Karen (34) who moved to a beautiful farm two years ago. We live here with our son, Ero (3) and our dear animals. We have about 5 hectars of grass/farmed land, 42 hectars of woodlands and the rest is our garden and housing. Our dream is to be able to live off the land, but we are currently also working outside the farm to make ends meet. We come from a background of entertainment and media. Our main project on the farm is 'Skogspiraten' - The Forest Pirate. Martin has developed a character over the past ten years; a mix between a clown and a magician in pirate clothes. With 'The Captain'/'Skogspiraten' he travels to children festivals, culture arrangements and the like on the summer half of the year to create adventures and treasure hunts for children and youths. The past two years have been making an effort to create an arena for the pirate to come home- to be able to invite children in groups to come to the farm to experience what we have to offer on our home turf. Other than this, we have a little flock of hens, three black cats and two goats (hopefully we'll have a couple more before too long). We are at the very beginning of learning everything there is to learn about regenerative farming (and it has been like that for years); and we have only seen two summers here; so we are still setting a structure for how everything functions on the farm. Our ideal everyday life includes harvesting most of what we need from the land (and exchanging services with our neighbours and local community), and whatever extra we might need we can earn a living from creating educational and inspiring adventures for the next generation. As every other farm might be able to say- no two days are alike. What needs to happens every day is looking after the animals, the garden, and making delicious meals for the humans. Otherwise, our projects for the summer is creating more pathways in our forest for adventures, cleaning up around the field (old fences, amongst other things), harvesting from nature (berries, mushrooms and the like), looking after our garden and greenhouse (tomatoes, chillies, paprika, cucumbers, salads- all the usual suspects), setting up fencing for our flock of goats, making the garden beautiful with flowers and plants, and otherwise enjoying a communal feeling together. Our house is big with many bedrooms, so you will sleep in a room upstairs, close to the bathroom. We usually have bread with spreads and toppings (open sandwich) for breakfast, oftentimes with eggs (boiled, fried or scrambled) and sometimes with beans and homemade bacon. In summer, our lunch could consist of pancakes, waffles, grilled cheese sandwiches, omelettes, salads and whatever else we might have left over from dinner the night before. Dinner is usually meat with sides and salads and vegetables, with local produce (we have local pig, local moose and grassfed beef in the freezer, as well as some chicken usually- either organic or raised here on the farm). Breakfast makes itself; and we will heartily accept both help and inputs for what to make each meal. We are very social and versatile people who love to play as well as we work. We love to play music, board games, games outside in the sun- the only thing we don't play is other people. Martin is your not-so-typical geek, who has acquired a knack for carpenting and planning practical projects, as well as making amazing stews when he so feels inclined to rummage through the fridge. Karen is your not-so-typical (pregnant) housewife, loves to make food (as long as there is enough time and people to impress), teaches ballet and modern jazz in the evenings and is passionately taken with acting locally while thinking globally. Ero is turning three years of age this spring, and is (in our most humble opinion) one of the best humans we know. He does not speak English, but is very open to body language and absorbs new information and knowledge like a sponge- maybe you can teach him a bit of your language? He loves cars, animals, books and puzzles, and most of all- meeting new people and being included in the conversation. The local community is very important to us, and we strive to have a good relationship with our neighbours, and to keep our house and table open to friends.
