My wife, Iryna and I work on the farm together. Her somewhat mentally disabled 25 years old girl, Monica, also lives with us and takes part in our life on the farm. We sow vegetables in a growth chamber from april and plant in the greenhouse in may and in the field in june. Rootfruits, cabbage and potatoes are stored during winter. Some vegetables such as parsley and brokkoli and salats may be sold on the local market directly from the farm from august. Sheepwool is shared in may, and the sheep are in the mountains july to early sept. Last part of july we cut the grass for hay or silage. We will put on plastic on two growth tunnels for vegetables and berry bushes and fruit trees of different kinds which need more heat than what we have here close to the mountains. We also need to set up a drip irrigation system in the two tunnels. On rainy days its nice to work inside the houses with the vegetables. We also need to make fences, and cut trees for firewood. We will combine that with clearing some space for starting small with a food forest. Jan has finished an online PDC course in which a design for the farm is crucial. We will start implementation with swales and some planting of bushes and trees. Work will be offered with all the above mentioned items according to the season. We will work much together with the necessary instructions, but also somewhat alone. Jan is also managing Children Green World Vision which teaches sustainable, organic, no till farming methods for smallholders in Mali called farming Gods way. We also apply these methods for some of the crop on the farm. Once a year for 7 years Jan has travelled in Mali, but mostly staying in touch with the local leader through whats app, and email. Jan was in Niger in september 2018 teaching farming Gods way in one of the churches there. To see some of our production see:https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=65053978
Organic methods: We use a system called "Farming Gods Way" which includes no till and mulching with fixed rows. We also use ordinary organic farming with some working of the soil. We try to avoid compression of the soil, building a living soil with much diversity. We also try to use some companion planting, and are about to have trees and bushes also included in the field and implement a permaculture design that is ready from Jan`s PDC.
